Five other people were injured in the fire, one of whom was seriously injured.
A pregnant woman and her five young children died in a fire that consumed containers housing agricultural workers near the tourist city of Antalya, in southwestern Turkey, the regional governor said this Friday.
Antalya Governor Hulusi Sahin said the fire destroyed several containers housing greenhouse workers in Kepez, north of Antalya.
“Three containers burned and we lost a mother and five children aged between four and nine,” he told reporters, standing next to the charred remains of a container and a burned-out car.
Five other people were injured in the fire, one of whom was seriously injured, he added.
The cause of the tragedy has not yet been officially determined, but the governor suggested that someone may have been barbecuing on a camp stove outside the containers.
“It appears that they went to sleep without putting out the fire. But for now, we cannot say for sure that this is why it happened,” Hulusi Sahin added, adding that investigators are trying to determine the origin of the fire and have arrested three people.
These deaths come as Turkey begins celebrations of Eid al-Fitr, a three-day holiday that marks the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
