President of Cuba says country is preparing for US attack

Declaration comes during energy crisis and economic isolation imposed by Donald Trump’s sanctions

The president of Cuba, (Communist Party of Cuba, left), declared on Friday (20 March 2026) that the country is preparing for possible aggression from the United States. The statement was made during an event in Havana, in which foreign activists brought humanitarian aid to the island in response to the economic and energy crisis.

At the meeting, the Cuban leader mentioned the president of the USA, (Republicans), and stated that all possible pressure has already been exerted on Havana, in reference to the economic isolation caused by the sanctions imposed by Washington. According to Díaz-Canel, the only remaining option would be to take power and destroy everything.

The government launched a defense plan based on the concept of “war of all the people”. Díaz-Canel did not characterize the strategy as aggressive, but defensive. He also said that Cuba’s revolutionary leadership remains united and that decisions are made collectively.

Carlos Fernández de Cossío, Cuba’s vice minister of foreign affairs, stated that the political system and the presidency with the USA. The position responds to reports from vehicles such as and the which indicate the intention of the Americans to include the departure of the Cuban leader and changes to the political system in a possible agreement.

The negotiations take place during the oil blockade imposed by Trump, which triggered an energy crisis and paralyzed the Cuban economy. The scenario worsened after Washington interrupted oil shipments from Venezuela, the island’s main supplier.

The republican government considers Cuba a “exceptional threat”especially due to ties with Russia, China and Iran. Donald Trump has openly shown interest in promoting regime change in the Caribbean country and has already indicated that there will be consequences if Havana refuses to negotiate.
