The federal government’s Gás do Povo program reached around 15 million families across the country and entered a new phase of expansion with increased reach and changes in the distribution model. The policy now guarantees free collection of 13 kg cylinders directly from accredited resellers.
The new stage began this Monday (23), with an investment of R$957.2 million in March alone. At this stage, 9.4 million families receive the benefit through free recharge, in a model that replaces cash payments with direct delivery of the product.
The reformulation of the program seeks to reduce distortions in the application of resources and ensure that the benefit is used exclusively for the purchase of cooking gas. The government’s expectation is to reach around 65 million recharges annually.
The most recent data indicate that the majority of families served are headed by women. In March, this group represented 92% of the total number of beneficiaries, equivalent to 8.7 million homes.
The expansion of the program occurs in a context of expansion of social policies aimed at food security and access to basic inputs, with a direct impact on the cost of living of low-income families.
