The president of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Edson Fachin, received this Monday the presidents of the Central Bank (BC), Gabriel Galípolo, and the BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, as well as the general director of the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues. The meeting was held in the minister’s office, at the Supreme Court, and its central theme was combating money laundering and the “financial strangulation” of criminal organizations, according to the Court’s office.
According to a note released by the STF, Galípolo told Fachin that the BC is finalizing a package of regulatory measures to mitigate risks to the financial system in the face of new digital threats.
Fachin, in turn, defended “coordinated intelligence” and a “unified strategic response between institutions”. According to the note, the Federal Police (PF) will provide technical support “to ensure that the new Central Bank guidelines have full legal and operational effectiveness”.
On the morning of this Monday, the 23rd, Fachin stated that organized crime is becoming a threat to democracy and cited research that indicates that at least 19% of the Brazilian population says they live in places with an explicit presence of these organizations. He spoke at the opening of the seminar “Challenges of the Judiciary in the face of Organized Crime”, at the National Council of Justice (CNJ).
“This prevailing reality generates immense concern and uncertainty. It is a citizen’s fundamental right to live without fear and oppression, where they can exercise their right to move around and express their thoughts. There is no rule of law in locations dominated by factions”, said the minister.
