The traditional French right, with the core of the Republicans, came first in the municipal elections yesterday in terms of the number of municipalities in which it prevailed, while the left (with the core of the Socialists and the Environmentalists) came first in votes, the French newspaper Le Monde reports in its analysis.
In particular, based on the newspaper’s analysis, which concerns the approximately 3,300 French cities with a population of more than 35,000 inhabitants, in which almost 70% of French citizens live, 1,267 self-identified right-wing mayors, 829 self-identified leftists and 586 self-identified centrists, i.e. close to President Macron, were elected. In these cities, 63 mayors were also elected on the far right and 7 on the far left, mainly in Insubordinate France and the Communist Party.
In terms of votes, 9.2 million French people chose ballots of left-wing combinations, 8.7 million of right-wing combinations and 3.8 million of centrist combinations. About 2.5 million French people chose far-right coalition ballots, while 1.2 million chose ballots supported by either France Independent or the Communist party. The abstention rate in yesterday’s municipal elections is around 42% and is the highest in recent years, with the exception of the coronavirus period.
