"I will stay here until my last breath": Lebanese refuse to leave, even with buildings in rubble

Since the start of the war, thousands of Israeli soldiers have crossed the border into Lebanon. Israel now controls a significant area in the south of the country. Despite Israeli warnings for people to leave their homes, Lebanese families refuse to leave, even with most homes reduced to rubble. The report is from the British Sky News, a partner of SIC.

Israeli bombs destroy Lebanese homes daily. Those in the city trying to clean up the rubble and debris from their destroyed homes either can’t or don’t want to leave.

Many remember the last Israeli invasion, when troops occupied Lebanese territory for almost two decades, giving rise to Hezbollah as an armed resistance group.

Hospitals in southern Lebanon are under enormous pressure, but Israeli military warnings to leave the area are being ignored by tens of thousands of residents and medical staff.

“I’m going to stay here until my last breath. This is my country, my ward, my job, helping people and keeping them safe (…)”.

All over southern Lebanon there are destroyed houses. They were given just two hours to leave the area. You can even see many boys climbing the stairs to try to retrieve some of their belongings. Everything disappeared in an instant.

Mervat and his sister have no other choice. “Where can I go? I have nowhere to go and I have no money”, he says.

Mervat doesn’t know where to start, but insists he will rebuild. This is her family home and she is not willing to give it up.
