Five days before the end of the party window, 52 deputies have already changed their acronym

The deadline for federal deputies to change parties without being punished — the so-called party window — ends next Friday (3). Negotiations and coordination to form alliances are expected to intensify in the coming days, and at least 52 parliamentarians have already announced a change of acronym so far.

The data is part of a survey of the CNNbased on information from , social networks and information from the parties or the party members themselves available until Sunday (29).

The PL (Liberal Party), the acronym of former president Jair Bolsonaro, is the one that registered the highest number of official memberships, 12 in total. One of the cases is the rapporteur of the CPMI (mixed parliamentary commission of inquiry) of the INSS, who announced that he had left União Brasil.

Federal deputies Coronel Assis (MT), Padovani (PR), Carla Dickson (RN) and Nicoletti (RR) also made the same movement – from União to PL. Bolsonaro’s party, however, lost at least four parliamentarians, who migrated to the PSDB, Podemos and PRD.

The PSDB, which has already affiliated at least 9 federal deputies. The highlight goes to former Lula (PT) government minister Juscelino Filho (MA), who left União Brasil.

Partial data has indicated a shrinking of the bench, which to date has recorded at least 14 casualties and two additions.

The expectation among leaders is that movements will accelerate in the last days of the deadline, given the consolidation of alliances and electoral strategies in the states. The week of the Chamber of Deputies promises to be empty due to the intensification of work in the electoral bases.

The party window is the deadline for federal, state and district deputies to change their party without suffering punishment. The period for exchanges is one month, starting on March 5th and extending until next Friday, according to the TSE (Superior Electoral Court).

The party window for positions in proportional elections – this is the case of councilors and deputies – is only open in election years and six months before the elections. This is because the principle of party loyalty for these functions provides that the mandate belongs to the party, and not to the elected candidate.

Therefore, the window is not necessary for party migrations of those occupying majority positions, in which those with the most votes are elected, regardless of the votes received by the parties.

Thus, mayors, governors, senators and the President of the Republic can change their party at any time, as long as the minimum membership period of six months before the election date is respected.

Last week, senator Sergio Moro (PR) migrated from União Brasil to PL, which opened up space for a dispute for the government of the state of Paraná. Another senator at the center of articulations is , who has been considered to run for the government of Minas Gerais for the PSB.
