According to American media, Donald Trump is considering a ground operation in Iran. The goal is to secure 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium for the threat of a nuclear bomb.
US President Donald Trump is considering a ground military operation in Iran to secure around 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported. TASR writes about it based on Monday’s report by the DPA agency.
The WSJ on Sunday cited statements by US officials as saying that Trump is currently considering the risks of a ground operation to military units. The newspaper claims that the president is open to such an operation, as it would help him achieve his central goal of preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon. Tehran denies these efforts.
Risks of the operation in Iran
However, it would be a complex and risky operation that the American armed forces would probably have to carry out in the country for several days, DPA recalled.
Before the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities last June as part of the 12-day war, Iran possessed more than 400 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said. However, more than 90 percent is needed to make a nuclear weapon. If Tehran managed to reach this level, according to IAEA inspectors, it would be able to produce ten bombs.
