Birthday walk ends in alleged attempted murder in Hawaii. Doctor accuses husband of trying to kill her during outing

Looking at the steep cliffs just a few feet away, Arielle Konig felt uncomfortable.

The nuclear engineer and her husband, 47-year-old anesthesiologist Gerhardt Konig, were hiking the “Pali Puka” trail on the island of Oahu to celebrate her 36th birthday. They had made the weekend trip from their home in Maui after a difficult few months in their relationship following what she acknowledged was an “emotional affair” with a co-worker.

The Konigs had been to couples therapy and worked to regain each other’s trust, he said. And after receiving a loving birthday card on the morning of March 24, 2025, Arielle believed things were getting better.

“I had tears in my eyes when I read it,” he said. “I felt hopeful that this would be a turning point for us in the marriage and that this trip would be enjoyable and the beginning of the next chapter for us.”

The walk ended up starting a new chapter for both of them – but not as she expected.

Her discomfort with the trail quickly turned into terror when, according to her, her husband pushed her towards the cliff, tried to inject her with a syringe and repeatedly hit her in the head with a rock.

“It was very shocking,” he said. “My initial reaction was that he was joking.”

This week, exactly one year after that walk, Arielle Konig testified in court in Honolulu and accused her husband of trying to kill her. He survived, he said, because he fought and screamed until two other hikers arrived and intervened.

His dramatic testimony represents the key piece of evidence in the final two weeks of Gerhardt Konig’s attempted murder trial. The trial has included evidence of a tense divorce and a child custody dispute, and has led to a deeper look into how this highly successful couple ended up face to face in court.

In opening statements, prosecutors laid out details of the attack and said Gerhardt Konig confessed to his 19-year-old son in a FaceTime call. He then allegedly hid from police for hours until he was arrested at sunset as he tried to flee, prosecutors said.

Defense lawyer Thomas Otake acknowledged that Konig hit the woman with the rock, but argued that it was not a premeditated attack. She said she was the one who started the argument by hitting him first. Konig did not try to push her off the cliff and there were no syringes involved, the lawyer said.

“This was an unplanned, unexpected fight that happened between a couple,” he described.

The accused may testify in his own defense. The trial is expected to resume on Tuesday.

Problems not paradise

Gerhardt and Arielle married in 2018 and had a child in 2020 and another in 2023.

Born in South Africa, Gerhardt also has two children from a previous marriage. Arielle, a nuclear engineer, works as a project manager at a nuclear energy company, according to her testimony. The couple moved with their children to Maui in 2023.

At the end of 2024, she approached a co-worker, exchanging “flirty messages” with him and deleting them so that her husband would not see them, she told the court. He described the situation as an “emotional affair”, saying it never became physical and no intimate photographs were sent.

When Gerhardt found out in December 2024, he “got angry and upset,” he said, and started checking her cell phone almost every day. They went to couples therapy for several months as they tried to repair trust.

Then the idea of a trip for two to the neighboring island of Oahu came up. Arielle mentioned “at some point” that she wanted to go to Oahu, and he planned the trip to coincide with her birthday on March 24.

They arrived on Oahu on March 23 and went to a spa and dinner. The next morning he gave her his birthday card. “Happy birthday, angel face,” he wrote on the card. “There is no obstacle in this world too difficult for me to overcome for you.”

They planned to go hiking that day and had dinner reservations that night, he said.

“He grabbed me very tightly”

The Pali Puka Trail is a popular hike about a 13-minute drive from Honolulu.

The trail, with forested areas and rocks, is short but steep. It’s about a mile round trip, but the path heads along a narrow ridge and forces hikers up rocky slopes before ending with a stunning view of the coast, explains a local hiking company.

Arielle and Gerhardt drove to the trail and began hiking around 10 a.m., taking photos along the way and sending them to the family on Snapchat, according to her testimony.

But after about 400 meters, he said he began to feel uncomfortable with the incline and refused to continue. Gerhardt went a little further, and when he came back, he was surprised that she was still there.

They took a selfie near the cliff while she was holding on to a tree, she said, when he caught her by surprise.

“When I approached him, he grabbed me very tightly by the arms and said, ‘I’m tired of this s—, go back there.’ And he started pushing me towards the cliff,” he testified.

She fought with him to try to escape. She threw herself on the ground and grabbed onto trees and bushes so he wouldn’t push her down the slope, she said. Then he sat on top of her, with his legs over her waist, holding an unexpected object, he said.

“He was on top of me, he had a syringe in his hand and he said, ‘Be still,’” he said.

A push, a fight and a rock

She tried to push his hand away and the syringe fell to the floor, he said. He moved his backpack with his left hand and held it with his right arm while holding a bottle of liquid, he said.

“I’m screaming, saying ‘What the hell are you doing, get off me.’ He was saying things like ‘Fuck you, you’re done, I’m done with you, I’m really done with you,’” he testified.

During the struggle, he said he bit his forearm and squeezed his testicles while screaming for help.

“He’d say, ‘Shut up. Nobody’s going to listen to you here. Nobody’s going to save you.’ He would say, ‘You’re done, we don’t need you anymore,'” she said.

He seemed to calm down a little, he said. But then he repeatedly hit him in the head with a rock, up to about ten times.

“I started screaming, because in my head he was trying to make me unconscious so he could drag me down the cliff. I started screaming as loud as I could,” he said.

Finally, he heard a woman’s voice say, “We’re here and we’re calling 911.” “He remained motionless and knelt away from me. I crawled away very slowly”, he said.

The two women helped Arielle get down to safety, while Gerhardt lay there motionless, he said.

The women – nurses Amanda Morris and Sarah Buchsbaum – testified earlier in the trial that they had just started walking when they heard a woman screaming and saw a man hitting her with a rock. They identified the attacker in court as the defendant.

Body camera footage from officers responding to the incident also showed Arielle’s bloodied face and head in the trail’s parking lot. She was taken to the hospital to receive treatment.

Meanwhile, Gerhardt Konig called his 19-year-old son on FaceTime and, covered in blood, confessed that he tried to kill Arielle because he believed she had been cheating on him for months, according to prosecutors.

Police searched for him for hours and detained him that night after he tried to escape, prosecutors said. A week later, he was formally indicted by a grand jury.

Arielle Konig was treated for serious lacerations and spent a night in the hospital, she said in court. He had stitches in his head and was left with scars on his head and face. In court, she brushed aside the bangs covering the left side of her forehead to show an area of her scalp where hair no longer grows.

During cross-examination, the defense attorney suggested that she was making false statements in an attempt to get her husband’s money and house.

After the alleged attack, she transferred more than $120,000 (about 111,000 euros) from the joint account to her personal account to pay the mortgage, car, credit card and childcare expenses, he said. He also filed for divorce, and the children are in his custody.

Arielle confirmed that she requested full custody of the children and possession of the house in the divorce and custody proceedings. The verdict of this criminal trial will be relevant to that decision, he acknowledged.

“You and your lawyer are using the allegations in this case as a basis to ask for certain things in the divorce and custody proceedings, correct?” asked Otake, the defense lawyer.

“Yes, in certain cases where this applies,” he replied.

If convicted, Gerhardt Konig faces a sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.
