One dog, called “Major”, was shot in Morro do Turiaçuin the north of Rio de Janeiro (RJ), this Monday (30). He was treated at the São Francisco de Assis Municipal Hospital and receives the necessary care.
This was the third case this year in the city. The animal’s owner left the house and found out that a for fear of being attacked. According to councilor Luiz Ramos Filho, from the Chamber’s Animal Defense Committee, “Major” lost a lot of blood and had four perforations.
“He had four perforations, two in the chest and one in each front paw. He underwent surgery to remove the projectile. Thank God there were no fractures and he will continue walking normally and is doing well”, he said.
The state of Rio de Janeiro recorded a record of in a single quarter. According to data obtained by CNN Brazilthe Linha Verde program until March 25, 2026, an average of 66 cases per day.
Compared to the first quarter of 2025, when the program received 3,689 complaints, the increase was 51%. The volume registered in 2026 also exceeds the total number of complaints made throughout the years 2013 (3,364), 2014 (3,241), 2015 (3,901), 2016 (2,576), 2017 (3,382) and 2018 (4,332).
Since it was created in 2013, Linha Verde has received more than 100 thousand reports of animal abuse. The program works as a channel for reporting crimes related to the environment.
In the state, the municipalities of Rio de Janeiro (3,139 cases), Nova Iguaçu (344) and Duque de Caxias (300) lead the ranking of records in 2026. In the capital, the neighborhoods with the highest number of complaints are Campo Grande (296), Centro (158) and Santa Cruz (129).
