European foreign ministers visited Ukraine on Tuesday (31) to mark the fourth anniversary of atrocities committed by Russian forces in Bucha, on the outskirts of Kiev. With US-led efforts to end the war on hold and Washington’s attention focused on the Middle East, European governments are seeking to maintain focus on the conflict, now in its fifth year.
A group of 12 foreign ministers arrived by train in Kiev and were received by Ukrainian minister Andrii Sybiha, who highlighted the “somber anniversary”. After the recapture of Bucha, occupied for about a month after the February 2022 invasion, more than 400 bodies were found.
“Such a strong European presence demonstrates that justice for these atrocities is inevitable,” said Sybiha. “Accountability for Russian crimes is vital to restoring justice in Europe.” On a visit to St. Andrew’s Church, Polish Chancellor Radek Sikorski stated that “anyone who says that Vladimir Putin is not a war criminal should come here and see for themselves.”
Authorities report that many victims were killed in the streets, some with their hands tied, as well as signs of torture and rape. The UN has documented more than 70 summary executions.
During a meeting with Ukrainian officials, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the need for accountability. “Otherwise there will be revenge and retaliation,” he said. “If you don’t see justice, you will want revenge.”
Kallas also warned that the war involving Iran could divert essential resources to Kiev, such as air defense systems. “We cannot let this go off the agenda. We are the ones who have to maintain this”, he stated. Negotiations mediated by the US remain paralyzed, with no plans to resume. Source: Associated Press.
