The UN human rights chief has called on Israel to revoke a law that makes death by hanging a standard sentence for Palestinians convicted in military courts of fatal attacks, saying the legislation violates international humanitarian law.
‘It raises serious concerns about violations of due process, is deeply discriminatory and must be promptly repealed,’ Volker Türk said in a statement sent to journalists.
He said that the law, approved by Parliament on Monday, is inconsistent with Israel’s legal obligations, citing the lack of opportunity for pardon and the mandate that executions be carried out within 90 days.
