President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated this Tuesday that his government will make every effort to prevent the rise in the price of diesel oil, which has an inflationary effect on food, and argued that the war in Iran, promoted by the United States and Israel, cannot harm Brazilians.
The government has already used tax and inspection measures to contain the rise in prices, but continues to monitor the rise in fuel prices carefully, given the importance of the issue in the population’s cost of living and its impact on the popularity of the president, who will seek re-election in October.
“And now, what is happening with the war in Iran? The price of fuel is rising. And, with fuel prices rising, this will reach the lettuce, it will reach the beans, it will reach the rice, it will reach everything we buy”, said Lula, at an event celebrating the 21st anniversary of Prouni and the 14th anniversary of the Quota Law in São Paulo.
“We are playing with whatever we can: with the Federal Police, with the Public Ministry, with all the inspection bodies. We will only calm down when the price of diesel oil does not rise, because the war belongs to (Donald) Trump. The war does not belong to the Brazilian people, and we do not have to be victims of this war”, he stated.
Diesel prices in Brazil, which imports around 25% of its needs, have already risen close to 15% since the start of the war, with the impact of the rise in oil prices that soared after the attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran at the end of February.

While speaking at the ceremony in São Paulo, Lula took the opportunity to comment on an article published in international media outlets drawing the attention of the leaders of the countries that occupy permanent seats on the UN Security Council — China, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Russia.

“When the UN was created in 1945, the Security Council — and its permanent members, which are these five countries — were created to maintain peace in the world. And they are waging war. They are waging war,” he said.
“We need to give a message to these five gentlemen who are members of the UN Security Council: come to your senses. The world needs peace. The world does not need war. Let them come together and stop this war”, he defended.
