Pacheco joins the PSB to run for government of MG – 03/31/2026 – Politics

The senator will leave and join this Wednesday (1st). The change of party occurs due to the expectation that the former president will run for the Government of Minas Gerais in this year’s election, in an alliance with the president (PT).

The announcement will be made official at an event alongside the national president of his new party, the mayor of Recife, . PSB leaders heard by the Sheet They expect Pacheco to announce that he will run for government at this Wednesday’s event.

To allies, however, Pacheco stated that the PSB still needs to seek out the PDT, PT, PSDB and MDB to discuss the candidacy. The senator has said that other names from these parties need to be considered. The , for example, is desired by the group.

Pacheco, according to allies, and with União Brasil, but PSB was the safest choice that would allow him to run for Government of Minas Gerais. He had to leave the PSD because of the party of Gilberto Kassab, current governor of the state, to run for re-election.

Mateus is a member of the PSD and was vice-president of the former governor (Novo), who left office to run for President of the Republic. The current governor wants to run as a right-wing candidate and may receive the support of (), depending on the situation.

The space opened by Pacheco in the PSD of Minas Gerais will be occupied by senator Carlos Viana (Podemos-MG), who also joins the party this Wednesday to run for re-election, forming a ticket with Mateus Simões.

Pacheco’s arrival at the PSB illustrates the repetition, at state level, of the party’s national alliance with the PT. Lula confirmed, this Tuesday (31), that Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) will leave the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services.

In Minas Gerais, Pacheco is expected to run for government for the PSB with the mayor of Contagem, Marília Campos (PT), as senator on his ticket. Eight years ago, Pacheco defeated Dilma Rousseff (PT) and became a senator precisely on the wave of anti-PTism.

As president of the Senate, Pacheco became the target of former president Jair Bolsonaro for issues related to the pandemic, for resisting the impeachment of ministers of the STF (Supreme Federal Court) and returning an MP (Provisional Measure) on fake news. The senator commanded the House from 2021 to 2025.

This Wednesday, the senator participated in a dinner with members of the PSB — a meeting that was seen by the group as the sealing of an agreement. The national president, João Campos, the Minas Gerais president of the party, Otacílio Costa, and vice-president Geraldo Alckmin, reinforced the invitation on the occasion.

For Lula, Pacheco’s candidacy is seen as important on two fronts. Firstly because it helps the PT member to have a strong platform in Minas Gerais, the second largest electoral college in Brazil. In another, sealing the immediate future of the former president of the Senate helps the STF.

Pacheco was the Senate’s favorite for the court, and that’s why the House didn’t take well to the appointment of the Union’s attorney general for the vacancy of retired minister Luís Roberto Barroso. The nomination, announced four months ago, was only made official this Tuesday, after the senators’ mood improved.
