Renowned human rights lawyer detained in Iran, daughter says

Iranian human rights lawyer Nasrin Sotoudeh was detained at her home by security forces, her daughter, Mehraveh Khandan, reported on Instagram this Thursday (2).

“We just found out that our mother was arrested last night while she was home alone,” Khandan wrote. She added that “when family members went to the residence, they noticed that electronic devices, including our parents’ laptops and cell phones, had also been confiscated.”

“To date, we have not had contact with our mother and we do not know which authority led to the arrest,” he added.

Sotoudeh is internationally recognized for her work defending the rights of women, children and activists in Iran.

Over the years, her work made her a central figure in the movement, but it also led to frequent arrests, long sentences and professional restrictions.

Despite constant pressure, she continues to speak out, becoming a symbol of legal resistance and defense of fundamental freedoms in Iran.
