Braga experiences Easter with an intensity that dates back to the 4th century, when Christianity was established in the region and shaped celebrations that have survived time thanks to the role of archbishops, brotherhoods and rituals that took shape between the 16th and 17th centuries. Among the most striking symbols are the farricocos, hooded figures that roam the streets with rattles and fireworks, giving the processions a unique atmosphere of recollection and drama.
The historic center, from the call dresses in purple, incense takes over the streets and churches reveal altars and images that reinforce the meaning of . Processions such as the “Ecce Homo”, the Burial of the Lord or the Resurrection continue to mobilize the city, involving several generations in the same community gesture. The celebration culminates with the Pascal Compass, which passes through houses and neighborhoods announcing the Resurrection, in a ritual deeply rooted in Braga’s identity.
Before or after the celebrations, follow this route of restaurants, taverns and seafood restaurants in the municipality of Braga:
Arcoense
The Arcoense restaurant is a must-see in the “City of Archbishops”, although it is located off the tourist circuit. After almost four decades, it remains a reference in the art of serving and preparing traditional Portuguese dishes, especially those from the region. The “Cabrito pingado”, served on a grill dripping over the rice dish, is the calling card, as are the “Rojões à Minhota”, the “Arroz de salpicão” and the “Pataniscas”, to begin with. The environment is cozy and comfortable. Average price: R$35.

It’s been like this since its opening, when Manuel Oliveira ventured into a project under his own name, after more than two decades running a famous restaurant in Braga. At the O Manel restaurant, the proposals multiply, as do the wines, in an elegant and comfortable space, full of corners and details. Average price: R$35.

arafate
It was the nickname of António Rodrigues’ father who named the typical space, famous in Braga when it comes to homemade food at reasonable prices. In the 80s of the last century, “my father wore a cap that covered his ears and people started to jokingly call him Arafate”, says the owner, who built the business with his father upon his return from emigration to France. With its doors open since 1981, a period still evident in the structure and decoration, it began as a tavern, serving green wine and snacks. “Fried cod”, “Pataniscas”, “Cod dumplings” and “Fígado acebolado”, prepared by the mother, were gaining fame, demanding better conditions, expansions, between rooms and terrace, and a more familiar environment. Ask about the specialties: “Bacalhau à Braga”, “Bacalhau roasted on the grill”, or “Arroz pica no floor”, prepared to order and serving “five or six people”. At the Arafate restaurant, Sunday is “roasted goat” day at lunchtime. In the glass, you can guarantee a “farmer’s” green wine, served in a typical earthenware jug. Average price: R$40.

Tasca do Carregal
The history of this typically Minho farm has been told since the 19th century. The passing of the years is evident at the entrance to the tavern, where old objects and photographs mark the passage of time through the various generations of the same family. Patrícia Correia is the soul of the kitchen, while Luís Ferreira takes charge of the living room, surrounded by stone walls. Much is still done as in the past, including growing various ingredients in the own garden that arrive on the table in the form of snacks. Among the favorites on the menu at the Tasca do Carregal restaurant are the “Moelas à Tasca” and the “Bolinhos de bacalhau”, as well as more substantial dishes. Fava beans stewed with chorizo, “Feijoada type Trás-os-Montes”, “Roasted pork ribs with potatoes”, “Bacalhau à Tasca”, “Empadão de clothes old” and sausage meat complete the proposal. To finish, “Aletria” and “Bread pudding” shine. Average price: R$20.

Today, at Tasquinha do Fujacal they revisit typical cuisine with a menu of regional icons. In addition to “Bacalhau à Braga” and “Papas de sarrabulho com rojões”, typical proposals shine daily in the set dishes, such as “Rancho”, “Massa à lavrador”, “Feijoadinha à transmontana”, “Arroz de duck” or “Pataniscas with rice with red beans”.
