The President of the European Council, António Costa, recalls the prohibition of attacks on civilian infrastructure during war. He is responding to Donald Trump’s threats against Iran.
Attacks on civilian infrastructure facilities during war are illegal, European Council President António Costa said on social media on Monday. The AFP agency drew attention to it, reports TASR.
His comments came after US President Donald Trump threatened to destroy civilian infrastructure in Iran if the country does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, AFP explains. “Any attack on civilian infrastructure, as well as energy facilities, is illegal and unacceptable,” Costa said.
“This is true of the Russian war in Ukraine and it is true everywhere else. The Iranian civilian population is the main victim of the Iranian regime. It would also be the main victim of the expansion of the military campaign,” he added.
“The European Union urgently calls on Iran to immediately stop attacking countries in the region and re-allow full freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz… After five weeks of war in the Middle East, it is clear that only a diplomatic solution will resolve its root causes,” Costa concluded.
