The Workers’ Party (PT) of Tocantins joined this Saturday, 4th, the former minister of Agriculture and former senator Kátia Abreu. The announcement was made via the state directory’s social media, with the presence of party president Nile William, and the party’s municipal president in Palmas, Rosimar Mendes.

The membership was also attended by former senator Donizeti Nogueira (PT-TO), substitute for Kátia Abreu, who took office in 2015, when the then senator was appointed Minister of Agriculture in the government of Dilma Rousseff (PT). In a video published on social media, Donizete welcomed Kátia and spoke about their alliance, which despite their differences, “brought a good result for Brazil”.

“In a gesture of political maturity, both overcome past differences to strengthen the ranks of the Workers’ Party in the state. Kátia arrives to add her administrative and political experience to President Lula’s re-election project and to strengthening the party bases in Tocantins”, writes the PT state directory in Tocantins.

Upon joining, Kátia thanked the state leaders for their support and President Lula’s invitation to join the PT. She also highlighted that the alliance aims to strengthen the platforms of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in Tocantins.

“I want to thank all the members of the PT and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who reinforced this invitation for me to join the PT of Tocantins. We will be together in this fight for democracy and the re-election of President Lula”, says Kátia.

With a degree in Psychology from the Catholic University of Goiás, Kátia Abreu stood out even in the field of agriculture, in which she has recognized work in Congress.

She was Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply during the second term of former president Dilma Rousseff, having been removed from office when the PT member was impeached in 2016

Previously, as a federal deputy for Tocantins, she was the first woman to preside over the ruralist bench in Congress. In 2010, Kátia Abreu received the Golden Chainsaw “award” from Greenpeace for, according to the NGO, acting to exclude points relevant to environmentalists from the Forest Code that was being discussed in the Chamber.

Em 2021, she recorded a video on social media “dedicating” the award to the then Minister of the Environment in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Ricardo Salles. In a tone of irony, the congresswoman stated that it is “unusual” that he, as Minister of the Environment, deserves the title. “At least, I was Minister of Agriculture,” he said.

In the 2022 elections, Kátia Abreu publicly declared her support for Lula’s candidacy stating that the vote for the PT member was pragmatic and was not an ideological issue. “Voting for Lula is not a threat to our farms and our businesses,” he said at the time.

Kátia Abreu was a federal deputy for two consecutive terms starting in 2000. In 2007, she was elected to the Senate, where she held the seat until 2022. In 2018, she ran for vice-presidency of the Republic on the Ciro Gomes (PDT) ticket, coming in third place in the dispute for Planalto.
