Lula defends national guard for “prompt intervention”

The president (PT) said this Wednesday (April 8, 2026) that Brazil needs to have a national guard to “prompt intervention”. The Chief Executive stated that the world is living at a time when it is necessary to take the issue seriously.

“We never take this security issue seriously. I keep joking with my military that, soon, a smaller country decides to invade Brazil and we will have difficulty”declared Lula in ICL News.

Regarding the creation of the national guard, Lula stated that it is necessary “for prompt intervention” em “in case of blockade, in case a faction tries to take over a city, a neighborhood, any town”.

According to the president “the world is demanding that Brazil thinks about security more seriously”.

MINISTRY OF PUBLIC SECURITY

Lula once again spoke about the creation of a Ministry of Public Security. He said that the body will come to fruition in the week following the approval of the , under analysis by Congress.

“Society needs the federal government to take action. And, to take action, we will have [que ter] the approval of our PEC, otherwise we won’t be able to enter. Because today security is almost entirely the responsibility of the States, according to the Constitution itself”these.

“I’ve always said, for the federal government to enter public security, we have to have a law that defines our role. And, when the PEC is approved, the creation of the Ministry of Public Security will be announced the following week, including a budget”, declared Lula.

This budget, according to the president, is necessary because it is not possible to remain “asking for alms”.
