Architect Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty Wednesday to eight murders committed in the United Stateslocal media reported on Wednesday. Heuermann is believed to have dismembered the bodies of his victims in a series of long-unsolved crimes known as the Gilgo Beach murders. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
Sixty-two-year-old Heuermann pleaded guilty to kidnapping, torturing and killing eight women in a Suffolk County court. If the judge accepts his confession, he faces life imprisonment, TV station PIX11 reported. Architect Heuermann, who was first detained by authorities in July 2023 outside his Manhattan office, initially maintained his innocence.
According to the authorities, over the course of 17 years, the victims were women who made a living from prostitution, and the man murdered them and buried them in remote locations, including a stretch of road running along a deserted beach across the bay from where he lived.
However, in 2022, authorities focused their investigation on Heuermann after it was discovered that he was the registered owner of the vehicle in which one of the victims was spotted. Police found some evidence at his family home in Massapequa Park. Heuermann is the father of two children and was married at the time of the murders.
According to the AP, the defendant often searched the Internet for information related to the investigation of the murders, asking questions such as: “Why was the Long Island serial killer not caught?”
