Norte has thousands of teachers available – who don’t want to go to Lisbon

Minister of Education speaks of 10 thousand professionalized teachers who are not teaching, who reject the capital.

There is a shortage of teachers in Portuguese schools but, as we know, there is not an equal shortage in all areas of the country. It’s an unequal distribution.

This Wednesday, the Minister of Education warned that there are thousands of teachers who are available further north, but who refuse to go to the south, more precisely to the capital.

“No Norte, there are more than 10 thousand teachers professionals who they are not teachingonly are not available to come to Lisbon”, commented Fernando Alexandre.

The Government’s big bet has been train teachers in higher education institutions in needy regions: “We know that if we train teachers in the North, they will later don’t go to the Algarveor they will resist going to the Algarve”.

At the Oeiras Education Forum, the minister admitted that the arrival of new teachers is not enough to compensate for the exit that is taking place: every year, 4 thousand teachers leave schools.

Fernando Alexandre also spoke about the “great inequality between regions in access to education and access to quality education”.

“The North region is the region that has the best results, systematically, in terms of learning assessment. Then we have the central region, but then we have a very big difference for, in particular, the Setúbal Peninsula and the Algarve, which have much worse results than the North region. (…) Greater Lisbon, which also has results well below the North region”, quotes .

The minister defended the 100% universalization of pre-school at all ages and in all regions of the country.
