Senate approves going to the USA to follow up on asylum requests – 04/16/2026 – Brasília Hoje

The Foreign Relations Commission approved this Thursday (16) an official mission of members of the collegiate to monitor the situation of Brazilians in that country who requested political asylum, as is the case of the former deputy (-RJ).

The request was presented by the senator (PL-SC) and says that the objective is “especially” to investigate the situation of Ramagem – which by the (Immigration and Customs Service, the United States federal agency responsible for monitoring immigration).

The text was approved without a roll call vote, when each senator was informed how they expressed themselves. The meeting was chaired by (-RS), who declared that he was in favor of the initiative.

Without presenting a date for the trip, the delegation intends to go to Orlando, the city in Florida where the former PL parliamentarian was arrested, and to the capital Washington DC It has not yet been decided who will participate in the initiative. The commission has 19 members and is chaired by Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS). When on official missions, senators are entitled to air tickets and daily allowances paid for by the house.

According to Seif’s request, the mission intends to verify the provision of consular assistance to Brazilians, monitor the execution of the Extradition Treaty signed between Brazil and the USA and carry out technical visits to ICE custody facilities and meetings at the Consulate General and the Brazilian embassy.

“Direct, on-site monitoring will not only allow the verification of custody conditions and respect for fundamental guarantees, but will strengthen institutional dialogue with foreign authorities, contributing to transparency, international cooperation and the protection of the rights of Brazilian citizens abroad”, says the text.

RAMAGE CASE

Alexandre Ramagem (13) and had an expired tourist visa and would therefore be subject to deportation, according to a document from the United States Department of Homeland Security obtained by Sheet.

According to allies, the former PL deputy was detained after a police stop in Orlando, initially for a minor traffic violation and later sent to ICE. They claim that Ramagem’s immigration status is legal and that he is awaiting analysis of his asylum request.

“Ramagem’s status is legal: he has a pending asylum request, filed some time ago and still under analysis, which allows him to remain legally in the United States until the final decision of the case — which is time-consuming, but has everything to be granted,” said the former congressman (PL-SP), who also lives in the USA.

Ramagem is considered a fugitive from Brazilian justice, after having fled Brazil for the United States last year. According to the general director of , Andrei Rodrigues, the former director of Abin (Brazilian Intelligence Agency) left the country clandestinely via the border with Guyana.

He would have moved in September to a luxury condominium in Florida, while recording videos and voting remotely in Chamber sessions, supported by a medical certificate.

In December, the minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) ordered the opening of the extradition process for Ramagem, convicted of the coup plot.

The former parliamentarian was sentenced to loss of office and 16 years and one month in prison for participating in an attempted coup d’état.
