“Curse of the Mummy”directed by Lee Cronin (“Death of the Demon: Ascension”), arrived in cinemas last Thursday (16), subverting what had already been said about Egyptian horror in previous decades.
Building a new universe for the film, he sees chances for a new franchise to be born. In an interview with CNNthe filmmaker revealed whether he wants to release more films about his version of “The Mummy”, further exploring the plot of the new production.
“I love the characters and the world. And the story is set in the present, but has roots that go back thousands of years. That gives room to expand this universe. But Jason Blum, James Wan and I believe in making the best movie possible first,” he said, citing the film’s producers.
“If people love it, then we’ll think about expanding. We’ll just keep focusing on the film we made, putting all our energy, care and attention into it. But I I definitely have ideas within this universe and characters that I would love to explore further”, continued.
In addition, “Curse of the Mummy” also bets on a broader narrative. According to Cronin, the film goes beyond scares and delves into different dramatic layers. “It’s a horror film, but it also has other elements. There’s a story of investigation and mystery, a strong family drama, a lot of heart and a lot of love, despite the crazy things that happen.”
“People want to go to the cinema to be entertained. It is important to offer something that is worth the price of admission”, he pointed out. “I wanted to make a film that was an event, something that needs to be experienced in the cinema, surrounded by other people”, he concluded.
