The Madrid Open organization announced this Friday afternoon (24) that Croatian Marin Cilic, João Fonseca’s opponent in the second round, withdrew from competing in the tournament. With that, the Brazilian advanced directly to the third round.
The clash with the Croatian, 51st in the world, was scheduled to take place this afternoon. As seed, Fonseca did not compete in the first round. Now, he should make his debut on Sunday (26). The time will still be confirmed by the tournament organization.
Also this Friday, the Brazilian will meet his next opponent. He will face the winner of the duel between Rafael Jodar (ESP), 42nd in the ATP rankings, and Alex de Minaur (AUS), 8th on the list.
Current number 31 in the world, Fonseca lost to De Minaur last year in Miami. A confrontation with Jodar, also 19 years old, would be unprecedented at ATP level.
