Carlos Salema, telecommunications pioneer in Portugal, has died

Carlos Salema, former president of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, professor emeritus and prominent figure in the national telecommunications sector, died this Saturday.

The teacher passed away this morning prolonged illness, a source close to the family told Lusa.

Born in 1942, in Ponta Delgada, Carlos Eduardo Rego da Costa Salema stood out for his contribution to the telecommunications sector.

“Developed research into microwave antennas, with particular emphasis on dielectric antennas, the propagation of microwaves in the atmosphere in the presence of rough surfaces, the reduction of redundancy in still and moving images and the computer simulation of industrial processes, particularly those applied to the movement and storage of cereals”, reads a no ‘site’ do regarding the award of the Medal of Scientific Merit, in 2021.

He graduated in Electrical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in 1965, and was then invited to be an assistant on the same course, according to a profile published by .

“He attended Queen Mary College of the University of London, carrying out, in 1972, a doctoral thesis on radiation and transmissions entitled ‘Theory and Design of Dielectric Cone Antennas’, obtaining the degree of Doctor in Engineering Sciences, in 1973”, reads the same text.

Full Professor at IST, between 1979 and 2003, in 2002, he was awarded the title of Doctor Emeritus awarded by the Technical University of Lisbon.

It was still President of the Telecommunications Institutedo College of Electrical Engineering of the Order of Engineersdo National Scientific Computing Foundation Executive Boardmember of General Council of the University of Beira Interiorand member of the Portuguese section, created in 2005, of Education Society Chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineersamong several other positions.

He was also awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction.

Carlos Salema’s body will be sent this Sunday, around 17:00for the church of Santo Antônio do Estoril. On Monday, the body mass will be celebrated, at 09:30then proceeding to the Galicia cemeteryin Estoril, at 10:30.
