A player from the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate won the sum of 703,600 euros in the lottery. The peculiarity of this case is that at the time of the draw, which took place on March 10, the man was no longer among the living. His wife will get the money, he informs.
A four-week subscription with the provider is responsible for this unusual case. The family took care of the man’s contracts after his death, presenting the company with a death certificate and the account was subsequently frozen. However, the submitted bets remained valid.
“The subscription was paid for and ran for another two weeks. Therefore, it was possible for the man to achieve this win shortly after his death.” company spokeswoman Kristin Splieth explained to the newspaper.
When the lottery contacted the family, only a very short time had passed since the death. Despite great sadness, the survivors perceived this news, according to the spokeswoman, as “a sign from above at a moment when one does not know how to proceed” and accepted it as a final farewell gift. From a legal point of view, the situation for the company is clear. The winnings officially fall into the estate, pass to the heirs, and the entire amount will be paid to the widow.
