The President of the United States, Donald Trump
Members of Donald Trump’s transition team will be preparing for the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO). China could take advantage.
Donald Trump will be planning exit immediate USA and OMS.
Em 2020during his first term and in the middle of the covid-19 pandemic, Trump even suspended the payment of US contributions to the WHO and announced that intended remove the country from the organization.
At the time, the US was harmed, with funding interrupted for global efforts to combat the pandemic and for the quality of public health in the US.
However, the exit process had not yet been completed when, in 2021, Trump was defeated by Joe Biden, who reversed the decision.
Trump is now expected to set the stage again for the US to leave the UN health agency on the first day of his second term.
“I have it on good authority that Trump plans to retire, probably on the first day or very early in his administration,” the expert told Reuters. Lawrence Gostinprofessor of global health at Georgetown University in Washington, and director of the WHO Collaborative Center on the National and Global Right to Health.
Trump’s motivations
As Reuters writes, Trump criticizes the agency for not sanctioning China for its alleged responsibility for the spread of Covid-19. The US president has repeatedly called the WHO a “Beijing puppet”.
The Republican appointed several critics of the organization to key public health posts, such as, for example, a vaccine skeptic who will take on the role of Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Critics warn that a U.S. withdrawal could undermine global disease surveillance and emergency response systems.
“The US would lose influence and power in global health and China would fill the void. I cannot imagine a world without a robust WHO. But a US withdrawal would seriously weaken the agency,” said Lawrence Gostin.
