Google employees ask CEO to block use of AI for US military purposes

“We want to see AI benefit humanity, and not be used in inhumane or extremely harmful ways”, says letter sent to CEO

More than 500 Google employees signed this Monday, 27, an open letter to CEO, Sundar Pichai, asking him to refuse to allow the United States government to use the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology in classified military operations.

“We want to see AI benefit humanity, and not be used in inhumane or extremely harmful ways,” says the letter, sent to Pichai. “This includes lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance, but goes beyond that.”

“The only way to ensure that Google is not associated with this type of harm is to reject any classified work,” the text continues. “Otherwise, these uses may occur without our knowledge or without our having the power to prevent them.”
