Yasmin Santos talks about being LGBT in the country: “I raise this flag”

The singer Yasmin Santos, 28, spoke about being an LGBTQIAPN+ person within country music — a musical genre that historically has a large presence of men, but comes gaining new spaces.

“People appreciating my art, for me, is what counts. What I like or don’t like shouldn’t even be an issue for people. Love is free, people. Regardless of where you are, it’s important to be who you are. I’m from the country side”, he said in an interview with CNN Brazil.

Yasmin was nominated for the 2026 BTG Pactual Brazilian Music Award, alongside names such as Ana Castela, Lauana Prado, Bruna Viola and Chitãozinho & Xororó. When it was highlighted that four of the five nominees are singers, she reflected.

“Many wonderful women are arriving in the country music scene and I think this is our role: to make this space for women grow even more within our scene”, he said, and recalled the importance of Roberta Miranda, Fátima Leão, the Galvão sisters and other singers who came before the current generation.

And she confirmed: “I think it’s really cool the way they responded without fear. It was a way of raising a flag and saying: ‘I’m a woman and I’m here. I need and I’m going to conquer this space’. They are an inspiration and I bring them to my projects.”
