Japan-linked vessel crosses Strait of Hormuz, says Tokyo

A ship linked to Japan passed through the Strait of Hormuz this Wednesday (29) and is on its way to the country, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on the social network X.

The tanker — one of the few ships to cross the blocked strait in recent days — is carrying three Japanese crew members, according to the ministry.

“The Government of Japan considers the passage of this vessel related to Japan a positive development, including from the point of view of the protection of Japanese citizens,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued.

“Japan will continue to urge Iran to guarantee free and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz for all vessels, including those related to Japan,” the statement concluded.

The United States and Israel’s war against Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory strikes have sparked regional instability and fragmented shipping lanes through the crucial strait – the route through which a fifth of global oil and natural gas supplies were previously transported.

The Iranian blockade of non-Allied vessels and the US-led offensive to block ships from leaving Iranian ports have caused global energy costs to soar, as well as stranding thousands of sailors in the canal.

At least 130 ships passed through the strait daily before hostilities began in February. But, on Tuesday (28), only six ships were trying to cross it, according to information from the MarineTraffic monitor.
