STF reaches 1,400 people convicted of the January 8 coup acts

The largest group of convicts is made up of 404 defendants, who received sentences of one year in prison, a number equivalent to 28.82% of the total number of convictions

The anti-democratic attacks that took place on January 8, 2023 marked one of the most serious episodes against Brazilian institutions, when groups of protesters invaded and vandalized the headquarters of the Palácio do Planalto, the National Congress and the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

The Federal Supreme Court (STF) reached the level of 1,402 convicted of the coup acts of January 8, 2023. The penalties are divided as follows:

431 – prison sentences
419 – alternative sentences
552 – non-criminal prosecution agreements.

The report on the progress of the processes was released this Wednesday (29) by the office of minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case.

According to the survey, the largest group of convicts is made up of 404 defendants, who received sentences of one year in prison, a number equivalent to 28.82% of the total number of convictions. Then, they were recorded 213 sentences to 14 years in prison, representing 15.19% of the total.

The highest sentence was applied to the former president Jair Bolsonaro, the only one sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison.

The balance also shows that 190 defendants are in prison, 169 of whom have already had their final sentences executed and 21 provisional arrests.

Last year, the First Panel of the Court had 21 sessions to judge the crucial, strategic, executing and disinformation nuclei, formed by investigators linked to Bolsonaro.

The trial ended with 29 defendants’ convictions and 2 acquittals.

On Friday (24), Alexandre de Moraes ended the definitive execution of the sentences of those convicted of the coup plot.

The arrests were completed after the minister ordered the execution of the sentences of the five convicts from Nucleus 2, the last group that was pending. The defendants belonging to groups 1, 3 and 4 have already been arrested.

Motivated by nonconformity with the result of the 2022 presidential elections, extremists vandalized national historical and artistic heritage, in an attempt to instigate a coup d’état and disrupt the democratic order.

Since the incident, the Judiciary has worked to hold those involved accountable, from the direct executors to the financiers and intellectual mentors of the coup attempt. The investigation, conducted under the report of Minister Alexandre de Moraes at the STF, divided the conduct into different areas of activity.
