The minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Gilmar Mendes praised the attorney general of the Union Jorge Messias, whose nomination to the Court was rejected by the Senate on Wednesday (29). In a post on social media this Thursday (30), Gilmar considered that the Senate’s decision must be respected, but classified Messias as “one of the greatest jurists” in Brazil and said that “history will know how to do justice to his trajectory”.
“He is one of the greatest jurists in the recent history of Brazil, whose career, marked by dignity, rectitude and dedication to public service, speaks for itself. I have always publicly stated that he meets the credentials required for the judiciary, and I maintain that position”, stated Gilmar.
The minister also highlighted that the nominee submitted himself to public scrutiny for five months “amid turbulence and, at times, serious attacks on his honor”.
“He behaved, at all times, with courage, dignity and humility. History will know how to do justice to his trajectory, given his commitment to the Democratic Rule of Law and the relevant services he has already provided to institutions. Brazil benefits from having him wherever he is”, concluded Gilmar.
