Former president Jair Bolsonaro was admitted this Friday to the DF Star Hospital, in Brasília, to undergo shoulder surgery. The procedure was authorized yesterday by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), following a request from the defense. His wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, arrived shortly after 7am at the scene to accompany him.
According to orthopedic doctor Alexandre Paniago, responsible for the former president’s surgery, the procedure should take place this Friday morning and last around 3 hours.
Bolsonaro has been under house arrest since the end of March, after spending two weeks in the same hospital, where he was treated for bronchopneumonia. The request for surgery was made by Bolsonaro’s defense to the STF on April 21 due to pain caused by a fall when he was in the 19th Military Police Battalion of the Federal District, known as Papudinha.
According to medical documents presented to the STF, the former president has injuries to his right shoulder that require surgical intervention to repair the rotator cuff and associated structures.
According to the request presented to Moraes, he uses analgesic medication daily. Physical and imaging examinations indicate a high-grade injury to the supraspinatus tendon, in addition to involvement of the subscapularis tendon, biceps subluxation and other associated injuries.
Medical reports indicate that Bolsonaro suffers from recurrent and intermittent pain, both at rest and during movements of his right arm.
The defense argued to the STF that the procedure has a “strictly humanitarian and sanitary” nature, with the objective of preserving the patient’s physical integrity, limb functionality, quality of life and dignity. The lawyers argued that maintaining the clinical condition could represent a restriction on the fundamental right to health.

Bolsonaro’s routine at home includes frequent medical check-ups and an increase in tension between former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro and the former president’s children, at a time when access to him is restricted, as shown by O GLOBO.
