New beanie capable of reading minds
A new (and revolutionary) device promises to simplify the process of putting words on the screen, simply by reading our thoughts.
The California-based startup is developing what its CEO calls the most usable brain-computer interface (BCI) on the planet. It is a cap that reads what we want to write, on a given computer.
According to the company, cited by , and the thoughts will appear on a device connected to approximately 30 words per minute.
These hats even have 100,000 tiny sensorseach smaller than a pea.
These are electroencephalography sensors (EEG) designed to record the brain’s electrical activity, and can capture enough to translate the thoughts in text without saying a single word out loud.
The big advantage here is that, unlike other BCI – such as Elon Musk -, It is not necessary to drill the skull and have an implant in the brain where strong signals can be easily picked up.
Instead, Just put on a hat and you’re ready to go.
Sabi guarantees that its technology can capture continuous speechrather than finite sets of commands like conventional EEG-based devices.
The set includes the aforementioned tiny biosensors, powered by in-house designed chips, as well as the Brain Foundation Model company, which it describes as having been trained on the world’s largest neural decoding dataset.
According to , this corresponds to approximately 100,000 hours of data of 100 volunteers to learn which brain signals are assumed to universally correspond to specific activities.
This should help ensure that when two Sabi users think about writing a certain word, exactly the same word appears on the screen – although the signals from their brains may differ slightly.
As with other BCIs, this could make computing and communication significantly more accessible to people with compromised motor functions, whether through disability or injury. Since it does not require surgical implants, people will be able to try it out before committing to the solution with much fewer complications.
According to New Atlas, Sabi’s hat is expected to arrive until the end of 2026. A cap version will follow later.
