Adolf Trump's autocratic America: Francisco Louçã's essay

The V-Dem Institute at the University of Gothenburg, which analyzes the state of democracies in the four corners of the world, warns that the US is on the way to ceasing to be a liberal democracy. Based on this report, which highlights the “autocratization of the USA” with Donald Trump’s second term, Francisco Louçã recalls that dictators such as Hitler and Mussolini were also elected, benefited from a coalition with the center-right and ended with total power.

The group of researchers in Gothenburg works with 4,200 researchers in 180 countries, using what they claim is the largest global dataset on democracy. But what it tells us about America allows a comparative reading with what we saw happen a hundred years ago? The march on Rome and the assault on the capitol. The violence of the Nazi brown shirts to whom ICE agents in the United States have been compared. Mere coincidences or signs that we must pay attention to, because we never know where and what the next Reichstag fire will be.

In this daily podcast, Paulo Baldaia talks to journalists from the Expresso newsroom, international correspondents and commentators. From Monday to Friday, analysis of the news that survives the froth of the days. Listen to other episodes here:
