North American president suggests opening for negotiations; states that the country is “bankrupt” and that it is “asking for help”
The President of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican), stated this Tuesday (May 12, 2026) that the North American government is prepared to start a dialogue with Cuba. In Truth Social, he described the island as a “bankrupt country” that would be “asking for help” while facing a deepening economic crisis.
Trump noted that no member of his party had approached him about the matter, but declared he was open to negotiations. “Cuba is asking for help and we are going to talk!!! In the meantime, I’m going to China!”, wrote the president.

The opening signal comes at a time of hardening of Washington’s foreign policy against . The Trump administration recently intensified economic sanctions against individuals and associations in Cuba’s energy, mining, security and defense sectors. The measures also affect Gaesa, a company controlled by the Cuban military.
The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, defended the sanctions against the company, saying that they are not aimed at the people, but rather at a company that would be “stealing” of the population to benefit a few.

The government rejected Trump’s statements. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel stated that the country will respond to any attempt at aggression and criticized what he called “threats.”dangerous” of military action.
In a statement, the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs classified the recent sanctions as a “act of relentless economic aggression“.The Cuban government also reiterated its rejection of the economic embargo (blockade) maintained by the United States since the 1960s.
