Temer compares the current economy to 2016 and cites inflation and high interest rates

The former president also stated that, if he were a candidate, he would bring together the other 2 powers for a “republican pact”

The former president (MDB) said this Tuesday (May 12, 2026) that the current situation in Brazil is similar to that of his inauguration in the Executive. He stated that, as in 2016, inflation and interest rates are high. Despite his speech, Temer called for “optimism” with the national economy.

We are today in the same situation in which I took over the government. Look, we have high inflation and high interest rates. However, because Brazil is the country of opportunities”, he declared at the 15th Lide Brazil Investment Forum, in New York (USA).

Temer commented on the electoral period. He said that the dispute should not be about “name against name“, but rather “project against project“. He argued that voters have the right to know exactly what the candidate intends to do through a written project, with around 20 to 30 pages, detailing actions in areas such as health and safety.

CONFLICTS BETWEEN POWERS

At the event, the former president participated in a panel that discussed paths to presidential succession and the reforms necessary for economic growth. The presidential candidates participated: the former governor of Minas Gerais, (Novo), the former governor of Goiás, (PSD), and writer Augusto Cury (Avante).

Addressing them, Temer stated that, if he were a candidate, he would bring together the other 2 powers for a “republican pact”.

On the 3rd or 4th day of my government, I will call the 2 powers of the State, because there is a relative disharmony between them. I will call the members of civil society and I will call the opposition to say: ‘Look here, we are going to lead the country forward, towards development‘”, he declared.
