UK PM appoints new health minister after Streeting's resignation

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed James Murray as the new Minister for Health and Social Care, following the resignation of his predecessor, Wes Streeting, and in the midst of the Labor government’s crisis.

Downing Street announced Murray’s appointment late this Thursday afternoon, who until now held the position of Chief Secretary of the Treasury British, as the new head of Health, just a few hours after Streeting presented his ministerial resignation.

Murray thus moves to the forefront of British politics, occupying a place in Starmer’s Government at a time of internal division within the Labor Party and with the Prime Minister’s leadership in question following the poor results obtained in last Thursday’s local and regional elections.

After Labor’s electoral defeat, Murray supported Starmer: “The Prime Minister said more things need to change and we need to offer people hope”, he said at the time on the social network X.

“The right thing to do is not to close in on ourselves, but to continue with what we were chosen to do”, he said.

Dismissal of Wes Streeting

A within the current Starmer Government – four Secretaries of State also resigned in previous days – in a move that increases pressure on the prime minister and worsens the internal crisis within labor, between those who ask him to leave and those who side with him.

In his resignation letter, the former head of Health stated that he had “lost confidence” in Starmer as leader and advocated opening a debate on the future leadership of the Labor Party “with the best set of candidates”.
