Climáximo activists remove food from supermarkets and distribute them to people in need

Supporters of the Climáximo movement entered a Continente supermarket, in Campo Pequeno, in Lisbon, from where they took food and hygiene products without paying, later distributing the goods to needy people near Oriente station.

According to the collective, around a dozen activists participated in the action, which aimed to protest against the profits of large supermarkets in a context of rising costs of living and the climate crisis.

In a statement, the movement explained that the products removed included bread, baby food and personal hygiene items, later delivered to people in poverty.

Climáximo states that the initiative intended to denounce the “extraordinary profits” of large supermarket chains and companies linked to fossil fuels, accusing them of benefiting from inflation and the population’s economic difficulties.

The action generated divided reactions on social media, between criticism of the removal of products without payment and praise for the gesture of food redistribution.
