The president of the United States, Donald Trump, warned Taiwan this Friday, 15th, against a possible formal declaration of independence, after concluding his visit to China, during which Xi Jinping pressured Washington not to support the island.
In one of the central themes for the Chinese government, Trump signaled opposition to any movement towards Taiwan’s independence and also raised doubts about US military involvement in the event of a conflict in the region.
“I’m not looking for someone to declare independence. And, you know, we should travel 15,000 km to fight in a war. I’m not looking for that,” said the president in a new excerpt from his interview with Fox News. “We’re not looking for wars, and if they keep things the way they are, I think China will be happy with that,” Trump added.
