Russian air defenses faced one of the biggest air attacks since the start of the conflict on Sunday night. The Ministry of Defense in Moscow announced that it destroyed a record 556 Ukrainian drones over more than ten regions of the country. In the Moscow region itself, the attacks claimed at least three victims.
Drone attacks claimed three lives in the Moscow region, its governor Andrey Vorobyov said on Sunday. The Russian Ministry of Defense subsequently reported that the country’s air forces intercepted more than 550 drones from Ukraine during the night. TASR writes about it with reference to the AFP agency.
- Attacks by Ukrainian drones in the Moscow region killed three civilians.
- One woman died after her family home was hit by a drone, another was stuck under the rubble.
- Russia claims to have destroyed 556 Ukrainian drones in twelve regions in one night.
Victims and injured
“One woman was killed as a result of an unmanned aircraft hitting a family home. Another person is trapped under the debris,” Vorobyev confirmed on the Telegram platform. The attack took place early in the morning and two men were killed in addition to the woman, he added.
“Since three o’clock in the morning, the air defense has reflected a large-scale attack by drones on the area of the capital,” Vorobyov said, adding that four people were injured. Infrastructure was the target of the attack.
Authorities in the capital itself reported that air defense systems intercepted at least 74 drones overnight, injuring 12 people.
Russian air defense on alert
“In the places where the debris fell, minor damage was recorded,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote on Telegram. According to him, a total of 120 drones were captured in the last 24 hours.
The Russian Ministry of Defense subsequently announced on social media that on Sunday night “air defenses intercepted and destroyed 556 Ukrainian drones” in more than 12 regions.
Retaliatory attacks after the ceasefire
Moscow and Kyiv resumed mutual attacks on Tuesday after a three-day ceasefire expired. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi vowed on Friday to launch more retaliatory strikes a day after a Russian attack on Kiev killed 24 people.
The war between Ukraine and Russia has been going on for more than four years. AFP reports that while the Moscow region is a frequent target of drone attacks, the capital itself does not see such strikes as often.
