The Baráka nuclear power plant in the UAE was targeted by a drone attack that caused a fire on one of the external generators. The Federal Office for Nuclear Regulation immediately assured the public that the security of the strategic facility was not compromised and all units are operating in normal mode without affecting the radiation level.
Sunday’s drone attack caused a fire near a nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), authorities there reported. They did not report any injuries or the impact of the incident on radiation levels, writes TASR according to the AFP agency.
The incident did not affect the level of radiation safety
“Abu Dhabi authorities have responded to a fire that broke out in an electrical generator outside the Baraka nuclear power plant’s inner compound in the Al Dhafra region and was caused by a drone strike,” the media office of the emirate of Abu Dhabi said on social media.
“No injuries have been reported and there has been no impact on the level of radiation safety… All precautionary measures have been taken and further information will be provided as soon as it becomes available,” she said.
“The Federal Office for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has confirmed that the fire did not affect the safety of the plant or the readiness of its basic systems and that all units are operating normally,” the office added.
IAEA: Military activities that threaten nuclear security are unacceptable
Nevertheless, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed serious concerns about this incident on the X network. “Military activities that threaten nuclear security are unacceptable,” noted IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
Although the UAE did not say in a statement where the drone was launched from, the country recently accused Iran of being behind attacks on its energy and economic infrastructure, writes AFP.
The agency adds that the plant began operations in 2020. It is located 200 kilometers west of the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, near the borders with Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
