The management of circulation in coastal areas has been the target of new measures by city halls, with the aim of reducing vehicular pressure, improving safety and reorganizing access to beaches during the summer season. In Almada, an intervention is being prepared that will change the parking and entry model at Fonte da Telha beach.
According to the news agency, Almada City Council intends to create a new mobility system that removes cars from the area next to the sand, replacing direct access with external parking spaces and shuttle transport to the beach.
New organization of parking in Aroeira
According to the same source, the project foresees the creation of two parking spaces in the Aroeira region, more specifically on Avenida do Mar. These spaces will serve as an arrival point for visitors before heading to Fonte da Telha.
The city hall also intends to install an access control system, in order to prevent vehicles from entering the beach when parking capacity is exhausted.
Shuttle transport still under evaluation
The transport model between the parks and the bathing area will be carried out using a “shuttle” system, although its operation has not yet been fully defined. According to the same source, the solution can be ensured in conjunction between Transportes Metropolitanos de Lisboa and the company Wemob.
The news agency adds that this service aims to guarantee the connection between external parks and the beach, reducing the flow of cars in the coastal area during busy periods.
Works already in preparation on the ground
Almada City Hall says that work has already started with the cleaning and preparation of the land intended for the new parking lots. According to the same source, this initial phase will be followed by additional interventions over the next few months.
The municipality explains that the project can be adjusted depending on the needs found on site, maintaining some flexibility in its execution.
Complementary infrastructures and expected costs
The plan also includes the installation of an access loop, information panels on yard capacity and a system of gates to control vehicle entry. According to Lusa, the initial cost of installing the gates is estimated at around 80 thousand euros.
The work also includes the reorganization of municipal land that will serve as alternative parks, in the initial phase ensured by the city hall’s own resources.
Possible evolution of the project until 2027
According to the Almada City Council, at a later stage these parks may be equipped with additional gates and shading structures, although the costs have not yet been defined. The mobility model may be adjusted over time.
The agency also states that the municipality expects that, in 2027, the project will be consolidated and further developed, after a phase of adaptation to real conditions of use.
Safety and environment as priorities
The city hall emphasizes that the main objectives of the intervention are people’s safety and environmental protection of the coastal area. It is important to highlight that the plan seeks to balance the use of space between residents, visitors and local economic activities.
Almada City Council also explains that the reorganization of access to the beach aims to create a more orderly and safe space, reducing car pressure on Fonte da Telha and improving management of the territory during the summer.
