Since the beginning of 2026 and until March 31the Portuguese have already spent 55.2 million euros on just two substances to treat obesity. Last year alone, more than 500,000 packages of injectable weight loss medications were sold, which equivalent to around 2,355 per day, says Público newspaper.
According to data from Infarmed, cited by the Portuguese spent, on average, about 613 thousand euros per day into two substances (Wegovy e Mounjarotrade names) for the treatment of obesity.
The trend is for the number to continue rising. Despite being expensive and not yet covered by the Unified Health System (SUS), the demand for medicines has increased significantlyeven by those is not diagnosed with obesity or diabetes.
The price of treatment for one month (each injection yields four times and the prick is done once a week) varies according to the dosage. For example, a 2.5 milligram pen can cost 182.92 euros while a 7.5 milligram dose can cost 337.63 euros).
