The Polish government received assurances from the United States that the American military presence in the country would remain unchanged. Polish Foreign Ministry State Secretary Marcin Bosacki said on Sunday that despite reports of the suspension of the planned rotation of US troops, Poland trusts Washington’s statements. According to him, the reduction in the number of American troops in Europe will not affect Poland.
- The Polish government was assured that the US military presence would remain unchanged.
- Marcin Bosacki claims that US logistical changes will not affect the number of soldiers in Poland.
- Opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski accuses the government of weakening relations with the United States.
- Donald Tusk claims that Kaczynski’s statements damage Poland’s image among allies.
- Wlodzimierz Czarasty promises to improve relations with the US, including a symbolic parliamentary resolution.
At the same time, Bosacki emphasized that the Polish ministries of foreign affairs and defense, together with the embassy in Washington, are actively working to clarify the situation. The goal is to reassure the public that American troops will remain on Polish territory, which is crucial for the security of the country and NATO’s eastern flank.
US logistics arrangements
Last week, several media reported that the Pentagon canceled the planned transfer of approximately 4,000 American troops to Poland. According to Bosacký, this step is the result of logistical and technical measures that do not affect the total number of American soldiers in the country. He emphasized that this is not a weakening of NATO’s eastern wing, but a temporary measure within the framework of broader changes in the deployment of US forces in Europe.
However, opposition leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski, head of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, used the situation to sharply criticize the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. According to him, over the past two years, the current cabinet has destroyed trust and relations with the US, which the previous leadership of the country had carefully built. Kaczynski accused the government of undermining Poland’s position in NATO and threatening the country’s security.
Political tension in Warsaw
Prime Minister Donald Tusk responded to these accusations by declaring that Kaczynski is trying to transfer responsibility for Washington’s decisions to the Polish government. According to Tusk, such statements damage Poland’s image in relations with its allies. At the same time, he accused Kaczynski and President Karol Nawrocki of breaking the trust between Poland and its partners.
The president’s adviser, Marcin Przydacz, added that the US decision could also have been influenced by some Polish politicians’ ill-advised reactions to American policy. As an example, he cited the February statements of the Speaker of the Polish Sejm, Wlodzimierz Czarasty, who criticized US President Donald Trump. This criticism led to the severance of official contacts between Czarasty and the American ambassador to Poland, Thomas Rose.
Efforts to improve relations
Czarasty responded to these accusations during a Monday meeting with the Chairman of the National Council of the Slovak Republic, Richard Raši, in Bratislava. He stated that sometimes it is better to refrain from comments, but at the same time emphasized that the Sejm will actively work to improve relations with the USA. As evidence, he cited a plan to adopt a resolution on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, which is supposed to be a symbol of the importance of American-Polish relations.
