Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on Monday described the first meeting with the American envoy for the affairs of the autonomous Danish territory, Jeff Landry, as constructive. “It was a constructive meeting where we were able to discuss in a positive atmosphere and with mutual respect,” Nielsen said at a press conference. “We have clearly reiterated that the population of Greenland is not for sale and that Greenlanders have the right to self-determination. This is not subject to negotiation,” emphasized Nielsen.
There is tension between the US and Greenland over repeated statements by President Donald Trump that he needs to acquire its territory to preserve the security of the United States. Greenland’s Foreign Minister Mute Egede told reporters after the meeting that the US had not given up its intentions to acquire the country. “We have our limits. Even the starting position of the Americans has not changed,” stated Egede.
