The Road and Transport Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved a bill, this Wednesday (11), which increases both the period of suspension of the driver’s license and the prison time for those convicted of manslaughter behind the wheel.
The text changes rules set out in the Brazilian Traffic Code and provides that convicted drivers may lose their right to drive for up to ten years. Today, legislation establishes a suspension of between two months and five years.
The proposal also increases the prison sentence. Currently, the crime carries a prison sentence of two to four years. According to the approved project, the interval increases to four to eight years.
In the opinion of the rapporteur of the matter, deputy Bebeto (PP-RJ) argued that a significant part of the cases classified as manslaughter result from serious violations of traffic safety rules, which would justify more severe punishments.
Next steps
The project now goes to the Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Commission for analysis. To come into force, it will still need to be approved by the plenary of the Chamber and the Federal Senate.
In the same session in which the text was advanced, the commission also approved rules related to the use of smart glasses by drivers while driving vehicles.
