The ship Asian Katra brought 1,600 tons of food and hygiene products to Cuba on Tuesday. Cuban Minister of Food Industry Alberto López said that the humanitarian shipment from Mexico and Uruguay is mainly intended for children, seniors and vulnerable groups of the population.
As the DPA agency recalled, the humanitarian shipment arrived in Cuba at a time when this Caribbean island is struggling with one of the worst economic crises in its history. Cuba faces severe shortages of food, fuel and medicine, while long power outages are a daily reality on the island.
Tension between Havana and Washington
The crisis, caused by years of economic inefficiency and underinvestment, was exacerbated by the long-term US trade embargo. Tensions between Havana and Washington have intensified in recent weeks. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened the Cuban government and hinted at the possibility of intervention or taking control of the island.
However, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel warns against military action by the United States. “The threat itself constitutes an international crime,” Díaz-Canel wrote on Network X. “If it were to come true, it would result in bloodshed with unpredictable consequences and have a devastating effect on regional peace and stability,” the Cuban president warned.
