The flames also reached the nearby island of Santa Rosa, where it recorded the largest fire in its modern history.
Hundreds of firefighters tried to bring under control large-scale wildfires in the southern part of the US state of California early Wednesday morning. Two large fires were gradually brought under control, while another broke out southeast of Los Angeles, authorities said. Residents of several districts were ordered to leave their homes on Tuesday.
Fires around Hemet
A wildfire near the town of Hemet has been spreading at a “dangerous rate” and has yet to be brought under control, Cal Fire warned. Two people, a firefighter and a civilian, suffered minor injuries, authorities said.
Several other forest fires also occurred in the western part of the US state at the beginning of the season.
The biggest fire on the island
On the island of Santa Rosa off the coast of California, authorities managed to bring the flames under control in a quarter of the affected area on Tuesday evening. The fire destroyed approximately 68 square kilometers of territory in a few days. According to the Los Angeles Times, this is the largest documented fire in the island’s modern history.
Northwest of Los Angeles near the city of Simi Valley, a wildfire has spread to nearly seven square kilometers, the fire department said. However, cooler weather and decreasing winds helped him fight the flames. According to media reports, the fire destroyed at least one house.
