The Algarve continues to attract public figures in search of privacy, tranquility and a more discreet connection to the Portuguese coast. Between less popular beaches, small fishing villages and narrow streets facing the sea, there are places that remain away from the major tourist circuits and that preserve part of the region’s traditional identity.
According to the Spanish newspaper, one of these places is Ferragudo, in the municipality of Lagoa, where José Mourinho has maintained a holiday home for several years. The Algarve town, located next to the mouth of the Arade River, has around 2 thousand inhabitants and has become the Portuguese coach’s chosen vacation spot.
Village between the river and the Atlantic
Ferragudo is located opposite Portimão, but maintains a very different atmosphere from that of the neighboring city. According to the same source, the village was born at the end of the 16th century and still today retains the typical structure of the old fishing villages in the Algarve.
The narrow, sloping, cobblestone streets weave between whitewashed houses, many decorated with colorful bougainvillea. The publication adds that the tranquility of the area is one of the elements that most distinguishes Ferragudo from other tourist destinations in the region.
Refuge chosen by Mourinho
It is precisely in this village that José Mourinho has a house located in the upper part of the town. According to the same source, the property offers views over the cliffs and guarantees the coach the discretion he seeks when he is in Portugal with his family.
The images released on social media by José Mourinho’s son showed a house built in accordance with the traditional Algarve aesthetic, with white facades and various elements in natural wood. The same newspaper mentions that the house is surrounded by a large garden and includes a swimming pool.
“The Son of Felix”
Despite his international notoriety, Mourinho is treated in Ferragudo in a very discreet way. According to Voz Pópuli, many residents of the village know him simply as “Félix’s son”, in reference to the coach’s father, Félix Mourinho.
The former goalkeeper and coach, who died in 2017, was a well-known and beloved figure in the locality. According to the same source, Ferragudo inaugurated a street named after Félix Mourinho in 2021, in a tribute that the coach publicly thanked.
Routine away from the spotlight
José Mourinho’s presence in the village is not unusual for local residents. The newspaper writes that the coach is often seen walking through the streets of the village or frequenting restaurants and taverns next to the pier.
The daily life of the village is mainly concentrated in Praça Rainha Dona Leonor, considered the center of local life. It is in this area that there are several terraces and restaurants known for their fresh grilled fish dishes.
Castle by the beach
Among the most recognized points in Ferragudo, São João do Arade Castle stands out. It is worth mentioning that the fortress was built practically on the sand and ended up becoming one of the most characteristic images of that part of the Algarve coast.
Although its origins date back to a 15th century watchtower, the castle was later expanded to protect the entrance to the Arade River. According to the same source, the structure continues to mark the landscape near the beach today.
Quieter beaches
In addition to Praia Grande, considered the best known in the village, Ferragudo also has less crowded beaches, such as Praia da Angrinha and Praia dos Caneiros.
In the highest part of the village is the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, from where it is possible to observe the coastline and the surrounding area. According to the Spanish newspaper, it is one of the points used by visitors to admire the views of the river and the ocean.
